Polyurethane Coatings

Polyurethane coatings are frequently used in the construction and preparation of storage tanks, oil pipelines, water and wastewater management systems, and other industrial structures.

These specially formulated coatings create a smooth finish that displays outstanding weathering performance capabilities while protecting substrates from chemical and environmental damage, abrasion, and corrosion. They are available in a broad range of colors and pigments, and can be formulated to create a matte, glossy, or transparent appearance.

Polyurethane Coating Types

Broadly speaking, polyurethane coatings can be grouped into two categories: one-component and two-component systems. One-component coating systems are formulated using materials known as blocked polyisocyanates, while two-component systems are based on aliphatic polyisocyanates. Two-component systems are more common and can be used almost universally, though some substrates perform better when treated with a single-component process.

Performance Advantages of Polyurethane Coatings

Today's industrial polyurethane coating technologies offer many performance benefits, including:

  • The ability to set properly in practically any natural temperature range.
  • Superior safety and inflammability properties.
  • Outstanding adhesion with no need for a primer coating.
  • Excellent resistance to environmental volatility, including temperature extremes and exposure to corrosive agents, chemical attacks, gouging, and abrasion.

Polyurethane coatings are also easy to touch up, and options formulated from 100 percent solid polyurethane agents display zero or near-zero volatile organic compound (VOC) levels. These characteristics support safety and environmental protection initiatives while boosting handling and performance advantages. Polyurethane coatings also set in a matter of minutes, can be applied in a single pass, and do not require any additional curing.
