Alkyd Coatings

Alkyds are oil-based coatings with a storied history that began centuries ago, and the use of alkyds gained popularity in U.S. industry by the 1920s.

As one of the first synthetic coating binders, alkyd enamel paints were trusted by many industries as a favorite surface coating. While other polymer systems offer faster curing, alkyd coatings continue to be an industrial staple due to their cost-effectiveness and ability to produce consistent results for a broad range of end-user requirements.

Benefits of Alkyd Coatings

Today’s alkyds contain a blend of synthetic resins and natural drying oils.

Urethane alkyd coatings are composed of natural drying oils and isocyanate reactors, which dry to form a tough film that will stand up to the rigors of food processing, subsea applications, and outdoor industrial coatings. Additional benefits of alkyd surface coatings include:

  • Versatility. Alkyd surface coatings can be customized for many applications by adapting reactant and modifier ratios.
  • Ecofriendly ingredients. Alkyd resins are composed partly of renewable oils and fatty acids, making them one of the more affordable VOC-compliant coating types.
  • Cost-effectiveness. Alkyds are single packages and relatively inexpensive to apply compared to other coating types.
  • Abrasion and chemical resistance. While plain alkyds are not highly water, chemical, or abrasion-resistant, certain urethane alkyds cure to form a water-resistant finish that endures impact. When epoxy or silicon is added to alkyds, the result is an epoxy ester with even higher water and chemical resistance. Silicon epoxies are used by the U.S. Navy to coat the outside of ships.
  • Temperature resistance. In certain ratios, alkyd coatings are highly resistant to extreme temperatures and the damaging effects of corrosion.
